How to Balance Chemicals to Maintain Your Pool

Updated: Jun 17, 2024

Balancing the chemicals in a pool is crucial for maintaining water quality, preventing algae growth, and ensuring swimmer comfort. Here's a general guide on how to balance the chemicals in a pool:

1. Test the Water:

Use a pool water testing kit to measure the levels of various chemicals in the water. The key parameters to test for include:

- pH level

- Total alkalinity (TA)

- Calcium hardness

- Free chlorine or bromine

- Cyanuric acid (for outdoor pools)

2. Adjust pH Level:

- The pH level should be maintained between 7.2 and 7.8.

- To raise pH, add soda ash (sodium carbonate).

- To lower pH, add muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate.

3. Adjust Total Alkalinity (TA):

- TA should be in the range of 80-120 ppm.

- To raise TA, add baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).

- To lower TA, add muriatic acid.

4. Calcium Hardness:

- Calcium hardness should be in the range of 200-400 ppm.

- To raise calcium hardness, add calcium chloride.

- If calcium hardness is too high, dilution with fresh water is necessary.

5. Chlorine or Bromine:

- Maintain free chlorine levels between 1-3 ppm or bromine levels between 3-5 ppm.

- Use chlorine tablets, liquid chlorine, or a salt chlorination system to maintain chlorine levels.

6. Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer):

- For outdoor pools using chlorine, maintain cyanuric acid levels between 30-50 ppm.

- Use stabilized chlorine products or add cyanuric acid separately if needed.

7. Shock the Pool:

- Shock the pool regularly to oxidize organic contaminants and maintain sanitizer efficiency.

8. Regular Maintenance:

- Clean skimmer and pump baskets.

- Vacuum the pool regularly.

- Brush the pool walls and floor.

- Backwash the filter when needed.

9. Consult Professional Help:

- If you are unsure or encounter persistent issues, consider consulting with a pool professional for advice and assistance.

Remember that the specific recommendations may vary based on the type of pool, climate, and usage patterns. Always follow the instructions on the product labels and the guidelines provided with your pool equipment. Regular testing and adjustment of chemicals are essential for a healthy and safe swimming environment.
